Is Portuguese Food Healthy? A Guide to Traditional Ingredients

Mar 27
2 min read

Portuguese food is often healthier than expected.

While we do have some dishes that are rich and indulgent, traditional Portuguese cuisine is rooted in fresh, whole ingredients.

Core Ingredients of Portuguese Cooking

Olive Oil

A fundamental ingredient used instead of butter in most dishes… and don’t even mention other types of oil.

Fresh Seafood

Portugal has one of the highest seafood consumption rates in Europe. We love a good grilled fish, shrimp, lobster, and many other delicacies you will find here.

Seasonal Vegetables

Cabbage, kale, tomatoes, peppers, and legumes are staples. We always eat a side of veggies or salads.

Beans and Legumes

Found in soups, stews, and side dishes.

Fresh Herbs

Coriander, parsley, garlic, and bay leaf dominate flavor profiles here.

Why Portuguese Food Can Be Considered Healthy

  • Strong Mediterranean influence

  • Emphasis on grilling and stewing rather than heavy frying (although we have some fried snacks)

  • Moderate portion sizes

  • Limited processed ingredients, we keep it simple

Like any cuisine, balance matters, but everyday Portuguese meals are often wholesome and nutrient-rich.
